I am excited to coordinate MHPN’s next house party,Thursday November 3 from 5 to 8 PM at Leon and Lulu in downtown Clawson. Leon & Lulu is known nationally as an innovative, unique and interesting retailer carrying a wide assortment of items, including furniture, clothing, gifts and home accessories in addition to many handmade American Craft products. The store is in an adaptively reused roller rink – the skates still hang on the walls, the snack bar serves up popcorn and coffee, the scoreboard, disco ball and intact rink floor inspire you to “roll” around the store. The rink was constructed in 1941 and I’ve heard from many of my local friends that they remember roller skating there.
The owners of the store, Mary Liz and Stephen Scannell are huge supporters of preservation and downtown revitalization. They have played a huge role in the revitalization and resurgence of downtown Clawson. House party attendees will hear Mary Liz’s story of turning the roller rink into a very successful retail operation. Mary Liz is active with Main Street Oakland County and the couple has recently purchased the 1941 Clawson Theater next door. You will get a special sneak preview of the pre-renovated theater and see the plans for its rehabilitation.
I have shopped at Leon and Lulu since their opening year and it is always a delightful experience. The staff is friendly; I love the free popcorn, and can find unique gifts for the people on my list who already have everything. My husband and I bought our couch there, and the delivery folks were fantastic!
The house party is free; ten percent of all purchases made during the evening will be donated to MHPN. We’ll be offering some complimentary treats and drinks to fuel your touring and shopping. So get your holiday list together, bring your friends and join us in downtown Clawson on November 3!
